What is a qualified B2B lead?
A practical definition of a qualified B2B lead and criteria for separating isolated contacts from real sales opportunities.

In this guide · 5 sections
A qualified B2B lead is a company or contact with enough signals to justify a concrete sales action. It is not simply a name on a list. Nor is it anyone who has downloaded a file, replied to a message or appeared in a search.
Qualification exists to separate interest, curiosity and isolated data from opportunities with real potential.
A lead is not the same as an opportunity
A lead may simply be an identified contact: a company found in a local search, a profile that interacted on Instagram, an enquiry received through WhatsApp or someone who downloaded a template from Radar Comercial.
A sales opportunity requires more. There is usually a good fit, a likely need, a valid contact channel and some prospect of moving forward.
The practical question is: do we have enough reasons to invest sales time in this contact?
Qualification criteria
Fit
Does the company match the customer profile that Makers or its client is looking for? Do the sector, size, location, maturity and type of operation make sense?
Likely need or problem
The problem is not always stated. It is often inferred from public signals: an outdated website, a lack of clear channels, geographical expansion, an active sales team, frequent enquiries on social media or visible manual processes.
Contact channel
A qualified lead needs at least one reasonable way to make contact: telephone, email, a form, WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn or another suitable channel.
Having many channels does not mean making contact through all of them. The choice should respect context, relevance and good practice.
Priority
Not all qualified leads have the same urgency. Some should enter an immediate cadence. Others belong on a nurturing list, in a sector-specific campaign or in a future approach.
Examples
A company found in Explorador Comercial, in the target sector, with an active website, a public telephone number and a clear sign of expansion may be a qualified lead for sales contact.
Someone who downloads a prospecting spreadsheet may be a lead showing interest. They become more qualified if they also provide their company, role or product of interest, or engage with other related content.
A conversation received through the WhatsApp Agent can be qualified if it reveals a need, budget, timeframe or intention to speak to sales. Triage and team handover criteria should be defined for each operation.
An interaction captured by the Instagram Agent may be the beginning of a lead, but it needs triage before becoming an opportunity.
MQL, SQL and operational qualification
MQL stands for Marketing Qualified Lead: a lead with enough signs of interest to be followed up by marketing or pre-sales.
SQL stands for Sales Qualified Lead: a lead validated for direct sales action.
In practice, the team should define simple criteria for moving from one stage to the next. Without this definition, the CRM fills up with contacts that have no next step.
A training company selling courses to other businesses could use this triage example:
| Observed situation | What is confirmed | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Company found in a local search | Sector and location match the target audience | Review the offer and confirm whether there is a relevant need |
| Enquiry received about training for a team | There is a stated interest in the topic | Ask about the number of participants, objective and timeframe |
| Enquiry with a defined objective, team size and timeframe | There is enough context for a sales assessment | Pass it to the person responsible for preparing the conversation |
Adapt these criteria to your offer and record them in the sales qualification spreadsheet. Research provides a hypothesis; the contact’s response lets you confirm or correct that hypothesis.
Why this matters
Qualifying leads reduces waste. The team contacts fewer companies that are a poor fit, prepares better approaches and improves the handover between marketing, sales and operations.
A qualified B2B lead is not a promise of a sale. It is a signal that it is worth starting, continuing or deepening a sales conversation with a clear method.
